Can SMP 3.0 use backend SAP directly without Netweaver gateway ?

Hi there,

I have a basic question about SMP 3.0 so please share  your knowledge with me.

Is there any way in SMP 3.0 to connect directly to back-end SAP (BAPI/RFC)  without using Netweaver Gateway ?

I've searched around and cannot find direct answer for this question. With SAP backend, it seems that using Netweaver Gateway is the most common way but if I don't use MBO (in SMP 3.0, this way is minor) is that the only method ?
